Perennials for your Greensboro Garden

Have you been enjoying perennials in your garden this summer? If not, you can next year! There is still time to plant perennials and have them blooming by next spring. Autumn can be a great time to plant them. As experts in perennials for Greensboro and the surrounding areas, we would like to tell you more about these plants and why you should consider them for your garden.
The greatest advantage of perennials is they come back year after year. They are a great way to add color and beauty to any garden or landscape. With the right type of perennials, your garden will enjoy year-round color. You can find perennial plants in various colors, sizes, textures and more. Finding the perfect new flowers and plants for your garden is easy, especially when you see the selection we have at our garden center.
Perennials offer more for your landscape than just beauty. They also help with soil erosion and stabilization due to their strong and deep network of roots. This root system also helps the plants withstand extreme weather conditions better than annuals.
Perennials can be planted during the spring or fall, while the ground is moist. There are perennials for every place in your garden. From sun to shade, wet or dry soil, there are suitable plants for each location. Our gardening experts can help you choose the right perennials for each area of your landscape.
When planting perennials, soil preparation is key. First, prepare the soil by weeding, digging and adding soil amendments. When placing the plants, give them room to grow. You don’t want them to be crowded by other plants. Once planted, keep them well watered, especially in their first year. This will help them flourish. Once established, perennials will bring color and structure to your garden and landscape for many years to come!
If you have any questions about perennials or how to get them established in your Greensboro garden, contact the experts here at Edgefield Plant & Stone Center. We will be happy to help! Stop by to see us at 3307 Edgefield Road in Greensboro, give us a call at 336-662-0081 or Contact Us.

Ask a Landscaper: How to Plot Out the Ideal Landscape

Planting season is finally in full swing! And you may be wondering how to plot out and plant the ideal landscape. At Edgefield Plant & Stone Center we are the expert landscape gardener for the Greensboro NC area and are here to help you plan and execute the landscape you’ve always wanted. This year, do more than just plant some flowers here and there. Contact the landscape experts and we can help you create a yard filled with flowering plants, bird-friendly foliage, beautifully mulched plots and lush green grass. We can even help you design a landscape to bring out certain elements of your yard or home.

As your local landscape gardener, we’d like to offer some helpful tips and advice to get your gardening underway. And, if you’d like some help designing and planting your landscape, come see a landscape gardener at Edgefield Plant & Stone. We look forward to helping you get the landscape of your dreams!

But first, when you or your landscape gardener sketches out your ideal backyard landscaping, it is important to aim for plants that offer varying height, color and texture and also look good with one another. Your garden plants should be varied in color, leafing shape, size, etc. Your plants do not have to be exactly the same as another within your garden but they should look good together.

Avoid keeping your lines too clean, defined or rigid. Allow natural elements in your landscaping like hills, trees, shade and divots to dictate placement. Use groupings of flowers to soften the edges of your home and property.

When it comes to flowers, choose varieties of different heights. Instead of planting them in neat rows, plant them in groups. Your flower groups should be somewhat irregular to offer a more interesting look and texture. A landscape gardener can help you learn which plants look and grow best together.

Don’t forget the mulch! Mulch creates a more manicured look for your landscaping. And, spreading mulch not only serves an aesthetic function, but also serves to protect your flower beds from the heat of summer. A layer of mulch helps suppress weeds while retaining water and moderating the soil temperature. A landscape gardener like us can help you with placement and even lay it down for you.

And if you need help, don’t hesitate to contact the professionals. A landscape gardener like us has plenty of ideas for your new garden and landscaping. We’ve been doing this for many years and have had the opportunity to come up with design ideas for many different clients. While no two gardens are the same, we can take the other ideas we have used for other clients and use aspects of them for your new landscape. We have the expertise to design and install a beautiful one for you; just give us a call!

Looking for an Organic Solution to Rid Your Garden of Pests?

Have you been experiencing some pests in the backyard garden? Pests such as wasps, aphids, mealybugs, whiteflies, beetles and others can be a real nuisance, possibly even destroying the vegetation you’ve been working so hard to grow.  But, who wants to use harsh chemicals on the food they’re planning to eat? There are many natural remedies on the market but finding a safe, non-toxic pesticide is not always easy. And, finding one that is effective can prove to be even more difficult.

Look no further! There are more natural, organic, environmentally friendly ways to manage your garden. And, the experts at Edgefield Plant & Stone can provide the solution! We all want to protect the environment, our families and our food. But many ‘natural’ insecticides aren’t always the most effective. That’s until you discover the wonders of Neem oil.  As your local garden center in Greensboro NC, we would like to discuss Neem oil and its many incredible benefits.

As a garden center, we love Neem oil. Unlike chemical pesticides, it is harmless to humans, pets, birds and beneficial to insects such as bees and butterflies. This is especially important because of how necessary bees are to agriculture and our environment. Bees need all the help they can get! And, a natural insecticide s a great way to ensure their safety while keeping your garden pest free. After all, bees and butterflies are no pests!

Neem oil can be your go-to solution to many of the problems that southern gardeners may face. It is derived from seeds and fruit of the evergreen tree, Azadirachta Indica. It is most commonly used in organic agriculture but can be applied to all areas of the garden including roses, trees, shrubs, fruit, vegetables, even houseplants. And, it is effective. It has insecticidal, miticidal and fungicidal properties that work.

Neem oil is the insecticide every gardener and garden center could want. It can safely be used on food and leaves no dangerous residue in the soil. It effectively reduces and kills pests as well as prevents powdery mildew.

Neem oil can also be used to treat fungal issues that are most prevalent in hot and humid climates, such as powdery mildew, black spot, anthracnose and rust.

And, these are just some of the reasons our garden center loves Neem oil! Try Neem oil for your garden and stop on by our garden center so we can answer any questions you have about it or about organic gardening in general.

When it comes to landscaping rocks for your Colfax, NC home – there are so many incredible possibilities!

Stonework can add sophistication and style to any landscape. And, the experts at Edgefield Plant & Stone can help you choose the best landscaping rocks and design for your unique backyard. Stones last for many years and look fantastic with a variety of landscape styles, so you are sure to find the right design for you!

Stone Steps
Landscaping rocks can be used to create beautiful steps that lend style and structure to your landscape. The large, flat rocks used to build these types of l steps ensure that anyone about to tread on the stairs will be completely safe. Stone steps add dimension and interest as well as an easy way to get around and enjoy your yard.

Stepping Stones
A stepping stone path is a charming and picturesque option for the garden and shady areas alongside the home. They are also a practical way to keep shoes clean when walking up to a side door or back door.

Water Works
There is something magical about the combination of rock and water in a landscape. Fountains and ponds made of stone are a beautiful way to make a big impact on even the smallest property. Or, consider a dry stream to help curb the flow of rainfall.

Anchor Plant Beds with Landscaping Rocks
Use rock throughout the property to anchor the plant bed and tie it in nicely with the rest of the scene. Landscaping rocks and stonework can also create different levels of flower beds on a small hill or incline to lend level ground for planting.

The size and shape of your stone will be central to achieving the look and feel you desire. So, it is important you choose your rocks carefully. And, the experts at Edgefield can help! Are you interested in landscaping rocks for your Colfax NC home? The Wisely Planned and Plotted Garden

Is gardening a new hobby that you have decided to pursue? Or are you a seasoned professional? Either way, designing and implementing a garden can be a daunting task. You may find that your desire to have the best of both worlds—color and organization—are often clashing in practical use. You wish it to be aesthetically pleasing as can be, in hue and generally pleasing to the eye. If, however, you are too strict in your planting—as per symmetry—your garden can look a bore. The experts on landscaping in Greensboro NC and surrounding environs, Edgefield Plant & Stone Center, have a few pointers to assist you.

Avoid keeping your lines to clean, defined or rigid. Your aim should not be a well-manicured European style formal garden; it is in your yard after all. Outdoor elements like sunlight and moisture can ruin even the best laid and planted gardens. One portion of your attempt at a formal garden may grow faster than the other, and maintaining it may be an insurmountable task.

As you sketch out your ideal backyard landscaping, aim for plants that match one another. Your garden plants should be varied in color, leafing shape, size, &tc. Your plants do not have to be exactly the same as another within your garden but they should look good together.

When it comes to flowers, choose varieties of different heights. Instead of planting them in neat rows, plant them in groups. Your flower groups should be somewhat irregular to offer a more rewarding look. Plants should complement your house. Soften the edges of your home and property. A good evergreen is a great type of plant to use along your home’s foundation. With each new season, you should have a new focal point for your wide range of plantings. This way your lawn, garden and landscaping will be great to look at all year long.

This gardening business can be a bit difficult, so please feel free to visit us at our plant center. Bring in some rough measurements and pictures of your land and backyard landscaping. Our experts will provide some recommendations. We will give you free design advice for smaller projects, and if you want advice on a bigger project, let us know and we can schedule a time to come out and take a look.

Tips for Planting Your Garden this Spring

Spring is just a few short weeks away, and we here at Edgefield Plant & Stone Center are excited for the upcoming warm months! We are a garden center serving Colfax NC, and we wanted to share a few of our favorite tips on how to get your garden ready this spring.

Start by taking a look at your flower beds. Clear out any debris and leaves that built up during the winter months. Cut back the dead parts on any perennial plants you have in your yard, and prune any trees you have while you're at it. If you see any broken branches and want to cut them off, make sure it's a clean cut so the tree will heal faster.

Then take another look at your flower beds and start coming up with a plan for them. Do you want to add any new plants or flowers? Visit our garden center to browse through our selection. We can answer your questions, advise you on how to best care for your plants and on which ones will work best in this climate and environment.

You should also start thinking about fertilizing your plants. If you already compost, then you are one step ahead of the game! Compost is a great fertilizer. Otherwise, visit our garden center and we can also advise you on the best fertilizers to use.

Our garden center is also a great place to shop for perennial plants and gardenias. The early spring is the best time of year to shop for these types of flowers and plants, so be sure to come by as soon as possible!

Finally, there are plenty of rabbit and deer proof fences available, if these animals are a problem for you.

Oak Ridge Hardscaping Elements

Summer is in full swing! Are you enjoying it to the fullest or do you feel like your property is missing something? You may want to think about adding some hardscaping elements. These features may let you enjoy summer even more. If you have a large property with a lot of landscaping work, adding hardscaping can take it to the next level. Our team of Oak Ridge hardscaping experts can help you from design to implementation. We want to see your property achieve its full potential this summer with a hardscaping project.

Walkways & Paths
Walkways and pathways can be used throughout gardens as well as entire properties. They can be used to highlight certain areas. By providing a place for people to walk, you can still maintain your landscape. People will be less likely to leave a designated path and wander throughout your property. They can also be functional, providing people a way to get from here to there.

Walls
Walls don't always have to be used to keep something in or out. They can be use decoratively, or used to break up space. If you have had steps installed, a wall could go on either side to give your stairs some context. Also, if you have an outdoor living area, you can define the space with a low wall. Walls can be used to highlight higher features of your landscape, making the top of the wall level with the area you wish to highlight.

Outdoor Living Space

An outdoor living space can combine every aspect of hardscaping. It is probably the most in-depth hardscaping project you could complete. You will probably incorporate walkways, walls and even more. A good outdoor living space will creatively use hardscaping in a number of ways. Our team of Oak Ridge hardscaping experts can help you design a plan.
