Landscaping Ideas for Winter

Winter is fast approaching, but a drop in temperature or the potential for snow on the ground doesn't necessarily mean that landscaping takes a back seat. In fact, there are several different plants and trees you can add to your property that are accentuated by the winter season. By following a few of these tips, you can still keep your yard looking beautiful, even when your summer landscaping treasures are missing.

Add Ornamental Grasses
Ornamental grasses are tall and thin, and really stick out during the winter months as their chutes jut up from the ground. You can find ornamental grasses with a few different colors and tints to match whatever look you're trying to achieve.

Install Shrubs
Some shrubs, such as the Beautyberry, the Dogwood, or the Red Edge Hebe, are looking their best during the winter months. Line your property or your home with these shrubs to add some color and excitement to the plain winter landscape.

What Are Perennials?

If questions were currency and we could retire on one, it would be, “What are perennials?”

Essentially, perennials are flowers that come back each year. So, what’s the difference between that and an annual? After all, wouldn’t it more make sense for a plant that grows back every year to be called an “annual”?

Plants begin life as a seed. As it grows, it creates roots, stems, leaves, flowers and returns to seed. The classifications (annual, perennial and biennial) are named as such to inform how a plant goes through this cycle. Because plants interact with their environment, the climate can have them behave differently than the classification would lead you to believe.

How does each behave?
  • Annuals: These go through a complete life cycle in one growing season. They may reseed and grow in the following season, and this can have some mistake an annual for a perennial. Snapdragons and marigolds are annual flowers.
  • Biennials: It takes two years for a biennial to go through a life cycle. The first season will result in few leaves, while the rest of the growing takes place in the next season. Those filed under biennial include hollyhocks.
  • Perennial: Perennials grow, bloom and seed for many years, and some can last through the winter. Popular perennials include lilies and tulips.

Perennials FAQ

Here are some of the more FAQ we get about perennials:

Which perennials bloom all summer?
There are few that will bloom all summer, but some like viola, Blue Buttery scabiosa and coreopsis will bloom for about 12 weeks with regular deadheading. Mixing perennials with different bloom times will give your backyard landscaping unique color all year long.

Should I cut back my perennials in the fall or spring?
It’s best to cut back dead foliage in the fall, as this will prevent organisms from “wintering in” over dead and decaying leaves.

Why don’t mine look as nice as the ones in the catalog photos?
It will take up to three years for newly planted perennials to mature.

What should I do when they stop blooming?
So they don’t interfere with the rest of your landscaping, prune back the stems so the plant gains a cleaner, neater appearance. This also might encourage it to rebloom.

How should I mulch?
Shredded cedar or mini nuggets are great choices. Spread it about 3 inches deep and avoid mulching too close to the plants crowns so your flowers won’t experience crown rot.

Backyard Landscaping Ideas on a Budget

Trying to get your backyard landscaping in order, but don’t have a lot of money to spend? Here are five money friendly ideas to get your lawn in order:

Take advantage of freebies
Cities often give away free trees, mulch and compost, while demolition sites are a great for bricks and stones (you should always get permission before removing any items).

Know when to hire a professional
There will be times during your project that you’ll find it just easier to hire a professional landscaper. Get help for the jobs that might take more muscle or design skill than you have available.

Put the project in your phases
Don’t buy everything at once, as you’ll just drain your bank account. Dividing the project into phases will allow you to review your progress and adjust plans, as well as save you costs.

Find other resources
Go beyond the stores, and check out botanical centers, plant societies and other organizations that often hold plant sales. You can usually find a good bargain on perennials and other plants.

Make your own compost
Use yard waste and food scraps to save on the cost of fertilizer. You can easily make compost piles from recycled 2x4s and chicken wire.
